ForkLift is half file manager, half connection client — and it's the second half that earns its keep. SFTP, FTP, WebDAV, S3, and cloud mounts are first-class citizens, with folder syncing and multi-rename built in. Its S3 support and folder-sync tools are the main reasons to consider it over Cosmil's new remote connections.

Its search walks the actual file system instead of trusting Spotlight's index. At $16 for three Macs with a real 7-day trial, it's the most aggressively priced of the modern entries.

Marta is a free, blisteringly fast orthodox file manager configured through plain-text files — closer in spirit to a code editor than to Finder. For keyboard-first users who want zero mouse dependency and don't care about visual flourish, it's a small marvel.

Nimble Commander is a meticulous, native implementation of the classic two-pane commander — now free with published source. It's fast, stable, and has an admin mode for jobs Finder flatly refuses. Like Marta, it's built for people who think in keystrokes, not clicks.

What about TotalFinder and XtraFinder?

Both inject features directly into Finder rather than replacing it — and on modern macOS that requires disabling System Integrity Protection, a security layer you should not turn off for a file manager. They were great in their era; that era ended. Every app above works on a stock, fully protected system.

How to actually choose

Start with how you work. For FTP, SFTP, SMB 2/3, or WebDAV alongside local files, Cosmil now handles remote browsing, editing, and transfers in its multi-pane layout. If S3 buckets or folder-sync workflows are central to your work, consider ForkLift. If you want a free tool and think in keystrokes, Marta and Nimble Commander are genuinely excellent — their plainness is a feature, not a bug. If you want maximum machinery and don't mind the density, Path Finder has out-toolboxed everyone for twenty years. If your work hops between a Mac and a Windows machine, Fileside is the only one here that follows you. And if you mostly want Finder with the details sanded smooth, Bloom is a fair, inexpensive take on exactly that.
